A Holistic Healthy Mind
by Debra Ferrell
One of the healthiest things we can do for ourselves is to honor a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit to reside. By doing this, we are saying that our bodies are not our own, but a temple by which the Holy Spirit can dwell and use to give glory to Him. God wants us to healthy in mind, body and spirit: all three. If one is out of sync, it can disrupt the other two, therefore altering the function of your body. A healthy mind and a healthy spirit work together and is imperative to be in unity to have a fit body. Let's focus on how to cleanse our mind and keep it strong and healthy.
The Mind
The Bible says in Romans 12:2 (AMP), “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].”
The mind is made up of our brain, emotions and spirit. A healthy mind and a healthy spirit work together, and is imperative for these to be in unity to have a healthy body. I feel that the greatest important balancing process comes through spiritual cleansing of the mind. It gives you an inner calmness. Just as one detoxifies the body, one must also detoxify the mind. Most of our problems arise when the mind itself produces or acts on information incorrectly, or continues to dwell upon the past. When this happens, these unleashed toxins must be quickly diminished to completely heal the mind and uplift the spirit. This can start by eliminating all negative thoughts, then progress with a more positive outlook. With a positive outlook on life, our bodies and mind tend to cleanse and heal faster. The first step is up to you.
A good start to detoxing your mind is on a 21-day program. Statistics have proven that it takes 21 days to change a behavior, and it all starts with discipline and a re-training of your thoughts. There are ways to eliminate harmful substances in your mind, but the first step is up to you. You have to be disciplined and make up your mind you will incorporate healthy habits into your daily life. To start, get rid of the negative thoughts and focus on the positive. You will be surprised that by just changing your lifestyle a little bit at a time will have drastic durable mental effects. This could be as simple as changing the way you eat and starting an exercise program. It also could be the people you are around. Do they uplift your or put you down? Are they positive or negative? Do you have constant stressors in your life?
I found that start a journal is a good thing in the mind-detoxification process. Write down everything that is positive as well as negative. Then, day by day, begin to free yourself from all of the negative things that have haunted you in the past. Let go of them. Your past is your past. Don’t let your past predict or inhibit your future. Clear your mind of all fears, anxieties and insecurities. Let go of anger, bitterness and unforgiveness. Ask God for His help. He does answer.
Some guidelines to follow would be to practice daily prayer, read inspirational Christian materials, and attend church on a regular basis. Meditating on prayer can help a person enormously in healing of the mind. When you pray and have other pray with you, God listens. Prayer brings out a significant meaning to our lives. You get clear vision by reading God’s word daily. Our connection with God, our universal intelligence, should be the One we keep in touch with. Therefore, we need to be acutely aware of what we let into our temple as to the way we think, conduct ourselves, speak and act. Do not let anger, bitterness or un-forgiveness dwell in your temple as it is not a healthy mind-set.
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:31 (AMP), “Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).”
